His dad didn't lie to him about his service obligations. The recruiters did.
The rest of my argument stands.
Matter of fact it's easy to extrapolate it to the over 1000 dead and 8000 (is it 8 or 7 thousand) injured and maimed servicepeople who got that way 'cause of bushy bob. Not to mention the 14 thousand dead Iraqis.
I'll admit that I did not read ALL the posts BUT I did read all of the interview. She sounds exactly like me. I said, back in 1988 & 89, when my son was in the Navy,I would agree with him going in the service when the politicians and politicians' sons went over and fought. Yeah! FAT CHANCE!!!!
My son joined the Navy without my knowledge and I was devestated. He was sent over to Bahrain (a hotspot back then BUT we were not at war then either) for 19 months and I worried about him soooo much. He was 20 years old back then & I considered him "still a kid". I still consider a 20 year old a kid.
That and a book my daughter gave me back in the early 80's to read made my mind up. The book is titled "Schrapnel In The Heart". It has about fifty chapters, each chapter the last letter home from Vietnam written by a serviceman. Each writer was killed in the war and the average age of the writers is 19 years and 4 months. Read it. The horrors and the fears of the boys are numerous. I could not read the thing like I would have read any other book. I could only read one or two letters at a time because it caused me to sob. And I still have not read the last few letters. It was very painful. I still have the book and I will gladly let anyone borrow it if anyone wants to. Just e-mail me.

It apparently didn't concern him too much else he would have forked over the last two years of tuition. And it's a given that recruiters bend the truth. They don't out and out lie because they can get in seriously hot water if they do. But I can ASSURE you that the contract he signed had everything that the Army was going to do for him in it.Quote:

Listen. I'm sorry he's dead. I'm sorry for every single soldier, sailor, marine, and airman's death.
But if you don't want to risk death in time of war....right, wrong or otherwise, be an accountant.

That is the point I was getting at. I doubt it.
I do not know for a fact that any politician's SON or DAUGHTER is in the service but I suspect neither do you. I DO know that that there are several family members of congressmen serving (nieces, nephews etc.).
And as far as me not getting your point, don't you DARE assume that I don't get anything about war, fear, or the misery caused by war. Having actually BEEN in one, I think I know a little more about it than you do.
Jumper - You may THINK you do but don't ever underestimate what I know or do not know.
AND don't ever give me an order. I am not yours to order around!

I can agree with on a lot of things about this but one thing I know you're wrong about. Recruiters can and do lie. I'm telling you straight up that mine told me to lie about my usage of mj. He was under pressure to fill quotas for nuclear techs and my ASVAB's were out the roof. I told him I wouldn't and after some arguement I finally agreed to say that I had used it once as an experiment and decided it wasn't for me. (I didn't elaborate that I was only talking about that day but . . .)
Turns out it was a waste of time anyway as some of the idiots they had waivered into the program just before me washed out and I got to play in paperwork hell because they changed the rules in the middle of my processing. I ended up having to switch recruiters and they also told me to lie about it.
I just didn't want to join under false pretenses. Idealism of youth and all that.
Ask me about my brother who tried to join the marines. Honest to god, he spent hours with the marine recruiter and agreed to join only if they would make him a plumber. He later joined the Navy.
